The Senate of Serampore College (University) was established in the year 1818, located in Serampore Town, Hooghly District, West Bengal, India. The institute was granted the status of an university in the year 1829 and it is the India’s first institution to have the status of an University. King Frederick VI of Denmark originally granted a Royal Charter giving the Senate of Serampore College the status of a degree granting university. The Senate of Serampore College (University) is a University within the meaning of Section 2 (f) of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956.
Several theological Colleges and Seminaries all over India including Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are affiliated to the Senate of Serampore College. The Institute provide degrees to the students through its affiliated colleges throughout India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. About 50 colleges are affiliated to the Senate of Serampore College (University).
